We went out to see
The Eagles last night at
AT&T Park, home stadium to the San Francisco Giants, and had a soaring good time. It was a beautiful night along the shores of McCovey Cove and the bands did not disappoint. After watching very capable sets from the Bay Area's own
Doobie Brothers and the
Zac Brown Band (a full review of their set can be found
here), the Eagles hit the stage around 8:20pm, slightly ahead of the announced 8:30pm start time. They launched into "Seven Bridges Road” which allowed people time to make it back to their seats and enjoy the show. After "Seven Bridges" ,
Don Henley said some nice words about their fallen brother,
Glen Frey. Guitarist,
Joe Walsh, then introduced Deacon Frey, Glen's son, who sang the lead on Frey's "Take It Easy". The hits kept coming after that, spanning a decade of some of their most prolific writing. "Witchy Woman", "Tequila Sunrise", "Lyin' Eyes", "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Those Shoes", "Already Gone" to name a few. Henley also added his solo tune "Boys of Summer" which sounded great.

The Eagles travel with quite a few musicians including long-time touring guitarist, Steuart Smith. Smith adds a great deal to the Eagles overall sound, and has the chops to keep up with Walsh, an amazing guitarist in his own right. The Eagles also included a big horn section to add color to a few songs including "Witchy Woman" and Walsh's "Funk #49". As the night progressed I found myself singing along to just about every song. Along with a near sold out stadium the crowd as a whole added their voices too, and we sounded right on key.

Don Henley at 71 still looks spry and the voice still sounds good after all these years. He traded drums for guitars and back again all night. The Eagles recruited
Vince Gill to sing most of Glen Frey's vocals and provide a solid rhythm guitar. He was spot on with just about every vocal. Anyone new to Gill's talents might be surprised to know that he isn't just a country singer, he is a world-class guitarist and singer. His studio work is regarded as some of the best in the industry. The Eagles selected a very capable replacement.

Joe Walsh is one of my favorite guitarists. For the 1st half of the show it seemed he was happy to let Steuart Smith do most of the heavy lifting. I was worried I wasn't going to get enough of Joe. However, he came on strong during the second half of the show with nice renditions of "In the City", James Gangs' cuts "Walk Away", "Funk #49", "Life's Been Good" and a nice "Rocky Mountain Way" during the encore. His voice box solo on "Those Shoes" was great as was his guitar work with Steuart during "Life in the Fast Lane" and solos and harmonizing on "Hotel California". I would have like to have heard "Long Run" and or "Victim of Love" but beggars can't be choosers. I recommend any one seeing this show if it comes to a venue near you. You will find yourself singing along and remembering good times. Be sure to check their tour schedule
