Review - Brit Floyd @ the Mountain Winery (6/29/17)

Over the past few weeks, the Bay Area has been treated to four Pink Floyd concerts that have been absolutely stunning. The first two were from none-other than Floyd’s founding member, Roger Waters, when he played the SAP Center and Oracle Arena. The most recent shows were from the best Pink Floyd cover band in the world, Brit Floyd, as they hit the Warfield earlier this week, and Saratoga’s Mountain Winery last night.

The Mountain Winery, for those of you who have never attended a show there, is a beautiful and incredibly intimate outdoor venue nestled into the Santa Cruz Mountain hillside of Saratoga that seats roughly 2000 people. It’s truly a special experience to see a show there, but the size of the venue limits the ‘production’ value that can be put into each of the shows — especially for bands such as Brit Floyd, where the presentation of the music is just as important as the music itself.

There’s no denying that Brit Floyd sounds nearly identical to the real Pink Floyd, and they should considering the band is the brain child of Damian Darlington who himself performed in the The Australian Pink Floyd Show for seventeen years before breaking off to start Brit Floyd in 2011.

Nine performers, made up of dual guitarists, a bassist, drummer, percussionist/saxophonist, keyboardist, and 3 back-up singers make-up Brit Floyd and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between them and the original Pink Floyd. Although abbreviated from their normal stage show, the lights and video montage mimic and play tribute to a true Pink Floyd performance -- however, due to the smaller stage at the Mountain Winery, the band wasn't able to fit the full circular screen typically seen onstage at the larger venues. You may have already seen Brit Floyd if you've channel surfed across PBS over the past few months! See the promo below.
