Army of Anyone (ex Filter & Stone Temple Pilots) @ Slim's (2/24/07)

Looking back at last night's show at Slim's, I have to say that I was incredibly impressed with the Army of Anyone set. I expected a relatively short 35-45 minute set considering the (super-group?) band only has one official release, but as it turns out, the band played what seemed to be an equal amount of 'covers' as they did new material from their debut album! And their set lasted about 75 minutes.

For those of you not familiar with Army of Anyone, the band consists of Richard Patrick on vocals and the DeLeo brothers (Dan and Robert) on guitar & bass.

Patrick's background includes fronting his previous project, Filter, after leaving Nine Inch Nails as the founding guitarist.

The DeLeo brothers were previously founding members of Stone Temple Pilots (STP) and have a special talent of attracting lead singers with 'addictive' personalities -- both the former lead singer of STP, Scott Weiland (who now fronts 'super group' Velvet Revolver) and Richard Patrick have had long stints in and out of rehab -- and have also resulted in both STP & Filter to cancel previous concert tours, which Patrick joked about last night referencing his last planned Filter tour through San Francisco a few years ago, which was cancelled due to his alcohol problem.

Drinking only water last night, Patrick filled Weiland's shoes with ease when the DeLeo brothers belted out classic STP riffs. Robert DeLeo cracked that Patrick even showed signs of Weiland's swagger and stage pressence.

The group sounded great playing current AoA material and crowd favorites that came from either the STP or Filter back catalog. And for a band whose past experiences had them playing much larger theaters or arenas, this was a rare chance to catch their performance at such a small venue like Slim's.

The setlist looked *something* like this: It Doesn't Seem To Matter, Father Figure, Vasoline, Non Stop, Generation, Disappear, Used To Know Her, Take A Picture, Big Bang Baby, Welcome To The Fold, Leave It, Piece Of Pie, Hey Man Nice Shot, Goodbye.

I'll leave you with a short video clip of the "Take a Picture" Filter cover from last night's show. Enjoy.
